Roti Island Snake-necked Turtle is Indonesia native reptile protected by Government due to its endangered status and shrinking habitat. The turtle gets its name due to its distinctive long snake-like neck and live natively in Rote Island, Indonesia. Unlike other turtles, snake-necked turtle cannot retract its head inside their shells.
In Nusantara’s mythology, turtles are told to be the favorite form of animal for Vishnu, God of preserver and protector of universe, to transform in to, in order to save the universe. In the time of turmoil and war of gods and titans, the world almost collapses under the pressure. Vishnu, transform into a giant turtle named Kurma, put the world on its back to save it.
